Hodokwan is a modern type of Tae Kwon Do that incorporates techniques from Hapkido, Grappling, Judo, Thai Boxing, and Japanese Karate. The form was designed as a means of practical self-defense while at the same time is used as a vehicle to improve ones mind, body and spirit. The training for Hodokwan consists of conditioning, forms practice, sparring, grappling, self defense and weapons.

Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a martial art independently developed over 20 centuries ago in Korea. Over the many years it has become a popular international sport. The main feature of Taekwondo is that it is a free-fighting combat sport using the bare hands and feet to repel the opponent. Taekwondo literally means "the way of kicking and punching". It consists of sharp strong angular movements with free flowing circular movements to produce a balance of beauty and power. With the addition of Taekwondo's trademark kicking techniques it is a complete system of self defense and personal improvement. All of its activities are based on the defensive attitude that originally developed for protection against enemy attacks.

The most important fact about Taekwondo is that it is not only a superior art of self-defense, but of the mind as well. It gives its practitioners self-confidence that provides an advantage over weaker opponents. This mental characteristic along with the physical ability is beneficial to the mental life of individuals as well as to their families and friends. With its practical means of self defense, its complete regiment of physical conditioning, and its aid to improved concentration and mental performance, Taekwondo offers a total fitness program integrating body, mind and spirit.

Today, Taekwondo is the most recognized Korean Martial Art. Taekwondo first came to be recognized as a system of self-defense in the 1950's when a group of leading Korean martial artists came together and unified their various art forms under a single style of hand and feet fighting. They named their style Taekwondo, and in the last 30 years have developed it into one of the most effective styles of unarmed self-defense in the world today. The popularity for Taekwondo is international and its evolution and development as an international amateur sport have grown quickly.

Boxing

Boxing is the martial art most recognized in the pre-modern Western World. Though it was invented thousands of years ago having roots in styles from Ancient Egypt, Greece, and many other civilizations, it dissapated as a fighting style about 1000 years ago.In the late 1600's the Europeans revitalized the sport, and turned it into a method for self defense by which both defending oneself and sport was possible. Boxing followed many immigrants into the Western World, and took root as one of the most recognized sports in history. Though it has always been recognized as a sport, it is also recognized as a method of self-defense. The variety of punches and techniques utilized in boxing make it essential in defending onself in real-life altercations.

Karate

Karate or karate-do is a martial art of Okinawan origin. Karate is a synthesis of indigenous Okinawan fighting methods and southern Chinese martial arts, possibly a version of Shaolinquan. Karate means "empty hand" in Japanese. It is primarily a striking art, featuring punching, kicking, knee/elbow strikes and open hand techniques; however, grappling, joint manipulations, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point striking are inherent in the finer points of the art. Karate is characterized by the use of the hips and stances to generate striking power, by the distinctive use of breathing (sharp, explosive exhalations) to focus power, and by the practice of prearranged forms (called kata).

Judo

The Kodokan was founded in 1882 by the late Professor Kano who himself had established Judo. Judo was derived from Jujitsu which had many names and schools. Jujitsu is an art for either attacking others or defending oneself with nothing but one's own body. Professor Kano adopted the superlative parts of all the Jujitsu schools, got rid of precarious parts, and established the new Kodokan Judo based on his own insight and arrangement Professor Kano promoted judo as a physical exercise from a wide national point of view. Proceeding with the organization of the Kodokan and enacting the regulations of Judo, he became the first Asian member of the International Olympic Committee in 1909 and worked for the spread of Judo world-wide.Judo became an official event in the Olympic Games of 1964, backed by Judo fans and sport promoters all over the world. It is now a very popular sport almost anywhere in the world.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu, which means "gentle art" is the oldest form of martial art. It originated in India more than 2000 years before Christ. It was created by monks who could not use any type of weapons to defend their lives against barbarian attacks. It spread through China, and eventually took root and was elaborated on in Japan becoming the first martial art style. In 1914, a Japanese Judo and Jiu-Jitsu master named Mitsuo Maeda (called Count Koma, meaning Count of Combat) came to Brazil. In return for help from the Brazilian politician Gastao Gracie, Koma volunteered to teach Jiu-Jitsu to Gastao's son Carlos. Carlos in turn taught his brothers (most notably Helio). They went on to further refine the art via constant no-rules competition, developing what is now known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Helio Gracie, the lighter in weight brother (only 135 pounds), introduced the application of leverage to the art, making it possible for a smaller opponent to defeat a larger one.
